Some states have already reopened and kind of gone back to “normal”. Some of the ones who opened still ask to wear masks and to keep social distancing. Today I heard that the governor of New York said that it is very likely to reopen the state or at least start reopening the state by May 15. I really hope that the cases of COVID-19 don’t keep increasing for this to be possible.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot of how the virus is affecting and will continue to affect the Dominican Republic. Today the Senate approved 25 more days of mandatory lockdown between 5:00pm and 6:00am. Also 25 more days of all businesses but the essential ones closed. Some people are very worried about this. Since back in D.R. the quarantine isn’t really respected by everyone. For example, yesterday there was a type of religious parade of hundreds if not thousands of people in the province of Puerto Plata. The authorities didn’t do anything to stop it. Also, an incredible amount of people has lost their job and aren’t getting the 8,000 Dominican pesos check that they were supposed to get, about 148 dollars. Some people like me are questioning the effectiveness of the lockdown. Some have suggested to reopen the country but with some guidelines that will be easier to enforce than making sure everyone stays at home. I think that the economy should be reopened, and everyone be required to use masks and keep social distancing. Because at the end of the day the virus will not go away until there is a vaccine and a country like D.R cannot survive with a frozen economy until this is done.
